Pronouns are words that replace nouns.

 I, you, he, she, they, and we are all examples of common pronouns.

Pronoun example


[1] Personal Pronouns

A personal pronoun takes the place of people or things. The personal pronouns are "I", "You", "He", "She", "It", "We" and "They".

[2] Possessive Pronouns

A possessive pronoun shows possession. The possessive pronouns are "mine", "yours", "his", "hers", "ours" and "theirs".

Example: I always check if the art across the street is better than mine.

[3] Relative Pronoun

A word used in place of a noun that makes the relation of the nouns is called a relative pronoun.

Example:-Who, Which, What, Whom, that....etc


(1) Who

Example:- Ram who is a dancer is my friend.

(2) Whom

Example:-I know the boy about whom  you are talking

(3) Which 

Example:-The red Pen is running well.


[4] Demonstrative Pronouns

A word used in the place of a noun that demonstrates the noun is called Demonstrate Pronouns.

Example:-This, That, There & Those


Demonstrative pronoun example


(1) This

This comes to demonstrate a singular noun that is nearer to the speaker.

Example:-Look here, this is my car.

(2) That

That comes to demonstrate a singular noun that is far from the speaker.

Example:-Look there in the corner that is my old car.

(3) These

It comes to demonstrate plural nouns that are near to the speaker

Example:-Look here, there are my new cars.

(4) Those

Those come to demonstrate plural nouns that are far from the speaker.

Example:-Look there in the corner, those are my old car.


[5] Emphatic Pronoun

A word used in place of a noun that emphasises the noun is called an emphatic pronoun.

Example:-Myself, Yourself, Himself, Herself, Itself, Ourselves, Yourselves and Themselves.


[6] Reflexive Pronoun

A reflexive pronoun is paired with another noun or pronoun to show it is acting on itself. They have a different function than emphatic pronouns, but they are the same words ("myself, yourself, herself, himself, itself, ourselves, yourself, themselves")

Example:-She cut herself

Self is added to → my, your, him, her, it

Selves are added to ⟶ our, them, your


Difference between Reflexive & Emphatic Pronoun


Reflexive pronouns show that the action of the subject reflects upon the doer. However, an emphatic pronoun simply emphasizes the action of the subject.


Example:- 1. She cut herself.

       herself is a reflexive pronoun since the subject's(the girl) action (cutting) refers back to the doer(the girl)

                  2. She herself cut the cake.

      herself is an emphatic pronoun because it is emphasizing the subject(girl)


[7] Indefinite Pronouns


A word used in place of a noun, that shows the noun is indefinite way, is called an indefinite pronoun.

For example, some, most, many, much, few, little, any, anyone, anything, each, everybody, everything, no one, nobody, none, several, somebody, someone.


Definition:-A pronoun that refers to a person or a thing without being specific


Example:-

1:-I have eaten everything in my fridge.

2:-I need to find something.

3:-I have nothing for breakfast.

4:-Anything would be okay.


[8] Interrogative Pronoun


A word used in the place of nouns that raises questions far the noun, I called an interrogative pronoun.

Example:-Who, which, what, whom


(1) Who

Who comes to raise a question for a human being that is the subject of a sentence.

Example:-  Ram is a Dancer.

                   Who is a Dancer?


(2) Whose

Whose comes to arise question for the possession of human being

Example:- Ram's brother is a Dancer.

                  Whose brother is a Dancer?


[9] Reciprocal Pronoun

A reciprocal pronoun is used to express a mutual action or relationship. There are two reciprocal pronouns.

  1. Each other
  2. One another
